Balancing Your Scalp’s pH Levels

pH (Potential of Hydrogen) is the measurement of acidity and alkalinity in your scalp. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, with 7 being considered neutral. Levels below 7 are acidic, and levels above 7 are alkaline.

The ideal target for hair is between 4.5 and 5.5, as being slightly on the acidic side prevents bacteria from existing in the hair and scalp. If the pH balance is too alkaline, your hair cuticles will be forced to open, while a pH balance that is too acidic will cause your cuticles to close.
